The History of Otsego County, New York
- Otsego County rests between the Catskill and Adirondack mountains and is bordered by the Unadilla and Susquehanna rivers. The closest urban centers are Albany, 70 miles to the northeast, and Binghamton, 60 miles to the southwest. Communities include Cooperstown, Oneonta and Unadilla.
- The author James Fenimore Cooper called Cooperstown home for much of his life and depicts the county's landscapes in his writings.
- Legend has it that the first game of baseball was played at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown in the 1840s.
- Since 1939, Cooperstown has housed the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The National Soccer Hall of Fame is located in nearby Oneonta. Cooperstown is also home to the Glimmerglass Opera, the Farmer's Museum and the Fenimore Art Museum.
- Traditionally, dairy farming was the mainstay of the region's economy; however, the number of farms in the region is on the decline, as the emphasis switches to tourism and manufacturing.
