    • 1). Visit the USCIS website and print out the appropriate green card application. Sponsorship of a family member requires form I-130, while sponsorship from an employer requires form I-140.

    • 2). Fill the form out completely with blue or black ink while answering every question. Provide an "N/A" for questions with no answer.

    • 3). Gather the required documents with the cooperation of your sponsor. These documents include birth certificates, marriage licenses and proof of employment.

    • 4). Seal the application and documents into an envelope and mail it to the appropriate lock-box facility listed on the green card application. Enclose a payment of the appropriate filing and biometrics fees in the form of a U.S. Postal money order made payable to the Department of Homeland Security.

    • 5). Wait for a response from the government and cooperate. You may be asked to attend an interview to determine the validity of your petition concerning family relationships, marriages or employment. You may be subject to a biometric exam by a doctor to determine if your health poses a public safety threat.

    • 6). Receive your permanent residency card, informally known as a green card, in the mail.
