How to Become a Sports Ticket Broker
- 1). Create a website for your ticket resell business. Build your site in a manner that allows customers to browse your ticket inventory and make purchases in real-time. Build your website using a platform with pre-installed shopping cart software, or install shopping cart software to accept credit card payments online.
- 2). Open a merchant services account with your local bank to process customer credit card transactions. If you intend to conduct business online or over the phone, it is nearly impossible to do so without a merchant account capable of processing credit card payments. As an alternate option, sign up for an online merchant services account with online payment companies such as PayPal (see Resources).
- 3). Obtain a toll-free number to handle customer inquiries and complaints. States such as Illinois require that all ticket resellers register a toll-free number to receive customer questions and complaints. A toll-free number is not necessary if your state ticket reseller laws does not require one, but a toll-free number will allow you to operate your business on-the-go.
- 4). Apply for a ticket reseller license to legally operate as a ticket reseller in your state if a license is required to operate. States such as Massachusetts require that all ticket resellers register their business and renew their license annually. Include your business name, contact information and the locations you intend to sell tickets, if you will do so in-person. Some states prohibit the resale of tickets within a certain proximity to the venue, so check your local ticket reseller and zoning laws to determine areas where resellers are allowed or forbidden to sell tickets in-person.
- 5). Purchase bulk quantities of tickets for high-demand sporting events such as the NFL Super Bowl or the NBA Championship Series games directly from the respective sporting association or from major ticket sellers such Ticketmaster (see Resources). As of July 2011, ticket resellers can exclusively purchase official resale tickets for NFL, NBA, NHL and other professional league games from Ticketmaster. Sign up for ticket alerts according to teams and venues to gain the earliest access to popular sports tickets when they first go on sale.
- 6). Join professional ticket brokers associations such as The National Association of Ticket Brokers or the United States Ticket Brokers Association (see Resources). Membership with either association can lend credibility to your business. Additionally, you can participate in members-only ticket exchanges and network with other sports ticket brokers in your area and throughout the country. If you join, place your associations emblem on your website, business cards and other business-related documents.
