The Value of Optimizing Web Screen Space

Web screen space is the equivalent of prime real estate; a great deal is paid for it, so it is important to get the most use and performance to make it profitable. When it comes to real estate, making the best use of every inch of a high-dollar neighborhood is essential. An equivalent comparison would be to use every pixel of screen space at a particular internet location. While this does not mean that every pixel needs to be filled with information and white space has no value, what it does mean is that white space and design need to be carefully planned. Available area should be used with great care and attention, especially considering the fact that there are so many different devices on which to use the internet today.

Avoid Complicated Features

There are many different arguments among professional designers both for and against the use of advanced graphics, images and certain other similar features on certain types of website and whether they are appropriate. Discussion around this design aspect will likely continue; however, one thing that is not going to change is that these types of elements do not belong on any internet presentation that is created for smaller screens like tablets and smart phones. On these types of devices, all of the design area and presentation is at an all-time premium; so taking up such precious space with complicated images, complex navigation, and too many drop downs, pop-ups, pop-outs and other features that will increase loading time would not be considered very beneficial. Used correctly, all of these elements can definitely enhance a full-sized website; however, on small screens what is more likely to happen will be the creation of a user experience that leaves viewers frustrated and cause them to leave the page.

Don't Waste Precious Space

While it is important to avoid the types of features that will cause confusion and poor performance, it is equally important not to waste space. Since every pixel is valuable on a tiny screen, each pixel should be used to its fullest extent which will certainly involve avoiding any feature that could cut the efficient functioning of a website. Having a responsive website design that can easily transfer all contents to any number of screen sizes is a great way to get the best use out of all available screen space since the website will re-size itself according to each particular screen shape. In this manner, the same information that appears on a wide-screen monitor can be directed to reformat itself without certain elements and fit in the allotted space of a smaller device so that all content can be properly viewed.

Keep Things Simple

In order to get the best performance from smaller size screens, simplicity is the key; this is certainly applicable no matter how the main, full-sized website looks like. White space is more meaningful than ever when the trend to become too cramped is high. At the same time, too much white space can be wasteful. Finding the perfect balance so that tablet and smart phone websites are user-friendly and can still deliver all information properly is the goal. It may take some practice to get all of the features just right; however, the end result will be the ability to reach more viewers and provide a more positive experience than asking visitors to attempt to read a microscopic version of the full-sized website.

When the amount of competition on the internet today is combined with the various ways that the Internet is accessed, the ability to reach broad audiences is more critical than ever. By providing a website that uses all available screen space in the best possible way, companies and brands will have a greater chance to make the desired connections that are needed to promote a product, service or message!
