The city of Trujillo on the north coast of Peru has one of the most defined -- and elegant -- historic centers in the country (a historic center that could be a future UNESCO World Heritage site). Whether you’re walking through the streets or looking at a map of the city center, it’s easy to spot the path of Trujillo’s now fallen city walls.
Looking at the map above (click to enlarge), the most instantly recognizable street is the oval Avenida España.
This avenue surrounds the entire historic center, its path following that of the city’s old fortifications.
Like most major cities in Peru, the streets of Trujillo’s city center follow a clear grid pattern with a Plaza de Armas (main square) in the center. The Plaza de Armas of Trujillo is one of the most attractive plazas in Peru, with its impressive Freedom Monument and surrounding buildings such as Trujillo Cathedral, the Hotel Libertador and the Municipality building (all marked on the map above).
Other notable buildings highlighted on the map and located within the old city walls include Palacio Iturregui, the Archaeology Museum, the Zoological Museum and the Mercado Central (Trujillo’s traditional marketplace).
