Wireless Internet with PCI Adapter and Router

    • 1). Screw the coaxial cable into the back of the router into the proper inlet. Flip the power switch on the wireless router and make sure all the lights illuminate.

    • 2). Choose the "Start" menu located in the lower left corner of the computer screen. Click on "Control Panel," then select "Network Connections." Pick the "Status" menu and wait up to 5 minutes for the notebook to locate network connections. The computer will choose the strongest network connections available.

    • 3). Click on the network connection with your router's name on it. If you are trying to connect your laptop to wireless Internet on an unsecured network, allow your computer to search network connections in the area. Your computer will automatically choose the strongest connection. If it is secured, you will need a password, but if it is unsecured then click on the network and proceed to connect to the Internet.

    • 4). Type in the network password when prompted to access a secure network. Afterward, open up a Web browser to begin your online activity.

PC and Mac Computer Connections to DSL or Cable Internet

    • 1). Purchase a cable modem or router or DSL hardware, depending on which service you sign up for. Some Internet Service Providers will supply this for you.

    • 2). Attach your cable modem to the coaxial cable jack by screwing the cable into the back of the modem into the proper inlet if you are using cable Internet.

Connect the DSL to the phone jack. If you are using DSL, you will need to attach filters to each phone using the jack so the Internet does not interrupt phone service. Plug the DSL filter right into the phone outlet. Insert the phone cord into the other end of the DSL filter. The filters are generally provided by the Internet Service Provider. Make sure you flip the light switch on the modem.

    • 3). Open a Web browser to check the Internet connection. If you have a PC, this is your last step.

    • 4). If using a Macintosh computer, select the Apple Menu on your computer and click on "System Preferences" and choose "Network." Click on the "Show" tab and select "Built in Ethernet" from the drop-down box.

    • 5). Select the "TCP/IP" tab to open up the "Configure IPV4" option. Under this option, select "DHCP" and "Apply Now." Open the Web browser to commence your online activity.
