Anyone can be arrested for certain reasons, especially if that person fails to follow the rules of law. A person may be arrest for a minor offense and he or she will simply be given a citation and will be released without booking in jail. However, there are certain people who have committed a serious offense and they will be arrested and booked in jail. Fortunately for these defendants, they have the right to post bail in order to be temporarily released from police custody.

A lot of victims feel like the bail process allows criminals to roam free despite of their crimes. However, the bail process does not exist to free criminals but it is their right to have some normalcy in their lives while their trial is ongoing. The bail process requires the defendant to pay a certain amount of money in order to be released from police custody but it is under the condition that the defendant must appear in all of his or her criminal proceedings which may include the arraignment, pre-trial motions, and their court trial. If the defendant fails to appear in court, he or she will be arrested immediately. In most cases, the bail amount which is set by the court judge amounts to thousands of dollars which the defendant cannot afford. If such event happens, the defendant can make use of the services of a bail bonds agent.

When a person is arrested, the defendant or his or her relative or friends can look for a bail agent who will promise the court to pay the full amount of bail if the defendant fails to appear in court. The defendant needs to pay 10 percent of the bail amount and the bail agent may also ask for collateral. When dealing with a bail bonds agent, the friend or relative of the defendant must ask to have the receipts for every transaction and they must also request copies of any signed documents. They must also ask the bail bonds agent to explain all the charges and present them in an itemized list. The bail bond agent must also be available for the defendant and his or her family and friends for any questions and to provide necessary assistance.

Technically, the defendant is in the custody of the bail bonds agent thus the defendant is his or her responsibility. For this reason, it is essential for the defendants and the bail bonds agent to have proper understanding and agreement.
