How to Repel Bird Flocks

    • 1). Perform a site audit of the locations that the flock has damaged. Take pictures of the flock of birds as best you can. Photograph the droppings left behind or the crops that have been shredded by the flock swooping in and enjoying a feeding frenzy.

    • 2). Take your photos to a professor at the local community college that specializes in birds. Ask him to help you identify the type of birds in the flock. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act protects some birds, such as the American Black Vulture and American Crow.

    • 3). Show him the pictures of the surrounding area. See if you can determine what is attracting them to the area.

    • 4). Contact local officials to report the problem. Ask them to dispatch their pest control unit to take care of the problem before you take matters into your own hands. For example, the State of Illinois advises to "Proceed carefully, however. The Migratory Bird Treaty and Endangered Species acts prohibit the trapping, possession, or killing of most birds, their eggs and nests, without a permit."

    • 5). Contact your regional branch of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a permit to relocate birds. With your application, submit your picture evidence of the hazards that the birds pose.

    • 6). Frighten the birds away with loud noise generators. Honk your car horn. Use fireworks, distress calls, ultrasonic machines or propane cannons. Shop for these items through pest control suppliers.

    • 7). Scare the birds away by using the fear of becoming prey to a predator. Unleash your dog on the flock. The dog can run through the flock and get them to fly away.

    • 8). Use visual scare tactics. Set up a laser light system or flashing lights to scare the birds away. Farm supply and resource suppliers sell these items.

    • 9). Employ a different scare tactic every few days. Stick with one for three to seven days and then change it up. Birds can get used to your scare tactic and not be frightened anymore.

Hire a bird control service or a chemical pest management company certified by your state. Ask them about the methods and pesticides they use. Check with the local branch of the Department of Agriculture to ensure that the pesticides they use are legal in your state.

Dispense your own bird repellents. Apply bird repellent gels to the areas that you have seen the birds land in the most. Spray the bird repellent into nearby trees to prevent them from taking shelter there.

Remove the birds' nests. Wrap nearby roosting and fruit trees with mesh nets to deter birds from landing and feeding in your trees. Seal nesting and roosting spots on the tops of buildings with caulk and metal wool. Prune trees so they are not as inviting for the flocks to roost.

String a mist net between two buildings. Place the mist net in their flight path. They won't see it until the run into it. Set up electrified wiring to deter birds from landing on your house, farm or building.
