- 1). Wash your hair as usual. A heat activated shampoo and conditioner can sometimes give better results with a flat and crimping iron, but is not required.
- 2). Rinse your hair in cold water. This causes the hair strand to contract, letting all edges of the strand lay flatter and smoother.
- 3). Apply a deep conditioning oil product if you choose. These products nourish the hair and give a strong shiny effect. Two well-known treatment brands are BioInfusion and MoroccanOil.
- 4). Blow dry your hair as usual, then straighten your hair with the flat iron if required. Though you are crimping your hair, straightening it first will smooth the areas that will remain straight, most notably the roots and tips.
- 5). Crimp your hair using the crimping iron. Set the style and smooth flyaways with a quality hairspray.
