I had just gotten off the 24 hour flight from Australia. I was exhausted and exhilarated from my life-changing four month adventure overseas. Now it was back to reality—I had to prepare for an interview in New York City.

The hellish beeping of my alarm wakes me up and I'm in a daze. Jet lagged, I awake at 5 AM in a haze of darkness. I need to take the train into Philadelphia where I can connect with another train to take me into the heart of Manhattan. I stumble into my loft and change into my suit. I am slightly nervous as I leave my house for an adventurous, career-oriented day.

I prepare for the interview on the train, trying to think of clever answers for those stupid interview questions: "Why do you want to work here? Tell me about yourself? What kind of supervisor brings the best out of you? Blah blah blah…"

In a moment to take a break from the stupidity of interview preparing, I look down at my pants. Oh crap! My pants do not match my blazer! Since it was dark and I was still in a daze when I woke up, I must have grabbed the wrong pants!

Now my heart was racing. I don't match! Will they notice that my pants are different? Is this going to be a huge influencing factor of whether not I get the job? I mean the shade of the plants versus the blazer was not all that different, but you could still tell. And I was already on the way to New York so there was no turning back. I had to block this out of my mind during the interview and just run with it and answer their questions as best I could. What A jackass!

Needless to say, I didn't get the job. I learned an important lesson though: always wear matching pants with your blazer to an interview.
