A First-Timer"s Guide to a Breckenridge Vacation

103 4
If you're a first-timer to Breckenridge, Colorado, you probably have a lot of questions about your visit.
Just like any trip to a new place, you'll likely think of a hundred ways you could have been better prepared once you actually arrive and check out the town for yourself.
But, as a Breckenridge virgin, you don't have this luxury.
Instead, by gathering a bit of basic information about the popular mountain town, you'll be as sufficiently prepared for your first trip as you will on your hundredth (and, yes, you will be making a hundredth trip).
  • Prepare for High Altitude.
Altitude sickness is a quick way to ruin your trip, so take its threat seriously by drinking plenty of water before and during your visit to Breckenridge.
Additionally, take it easy the first day or two that you are acclimating to 9,600 feet by participating in light activity at the start of your trip and saving all strenuous activities for a few days into the visit.
Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and other depressant drugs while you are acclimating to altitude as well.
Your physical shape will also play a role in the altitude's effect on your body.
The more exercising you can do before your trip to Breckenridge, the better you'll feel as you acclimate to the high life.
  • Welcome the Sun.
Breckenridge normally boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each year with rays that are 40% stronger than those at sea level.
Mix this bright fact with the thinner atmosphere and the sun's reflection from water and snow and it's evident that you'll need to protect yourself from the stronger ultraviolet lights.
Be sure to bring sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses, and use them throughout the day.
  • Layer Up.
Even in the summer months when it can get quite warm in Breckenridge, the weather can change quickly at high altitudes.
You'll want to dress in layers and always carry extra clothing with you.
Breathable, or non-wicking, clothing is a smart choice as it'll keep you dry from moisture.
Breckenridge prides itself on its laid-back attitude and friendly people.
Leave your designer heels or dress shoes at home and come to Breckenridge with comfortable clothes that will allow you to relax, unwind, and soak up the mellow vibe.
  • Watch the Weather.
Outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to plan to attack the day early.
Summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms and the winter months meet dark skies early in the day.
And, the weather can always change with the snap of a finger, so it's never a bad idea to carry along a light rain jacket during hiking season.
  • Get Around Town.
A real vacation means a break from driving and traffic.
Fortunately, Breckenridge helps you accomplish this wish with its Free Ride Transportation System.
So, leave the car keys behind and let someone else drive you through the ski area, parking lots, Recreation Area, and other spots around town.
Additionally, most dining, shopping, and activities are within walking distance of Breckenridge's downtown, so strap on your tennis shoes and enjoy a walk down Main Street.
There's no question that some of your best memories will be made in Breckenridge.
Catering to kids, teens, adults, and seniors, you'll never run out of activities in this mountain town.
Your initial step of planning the trip is the hardest part.
Now it's time to relax and get to town where the real fun will begin!
