The term evergreen tree can be misleading, as the name seems to suggest the tree is evergreen in color, but that is not always the case. The foliage on some evergreen trees is silver-blue, yellow-green, brown, and even gray. Likewise, the name doesn't mean the tree never loses its needles; it sheds the old ones while maintaining a full tree of new needles. Some evergreen trees and plants include fir, pine, Juniper and Japanese Yew. - Arborvitae is an evergreen tree that does best when planted in clay or acidic soils that receive only partial sunlight. The American Arborvitae prefers wet soils. This tree can be conical or columnar and produces green foliage. Fir is another type of evergreen, and has four subtypes: white fir, mountain fir, Douglas fir, and balsam fir. Douglas and balsam fir can each handle partial sun locations, with the Douglas fir also able to withstand windy locations and the balsam preferring wet soils.
There are approximately 16 Juniper evergreen tree types, with one of three shapes: conical, columnar and weeping. The needle colors of the Junipers range from green, silver-blue, blue-green, and gray to whitish blue. European larch is another evergreen tree type, boasting needles of yellow color in the fall. But it is the pine tree that can boast the most subtypes: 17 in all, as well as the most shapes, including irregular. The last evergreen tree type, the spruce, has 12 subtypes and its needles range have the most color range. It is the only evergreen that comes in a pyramidal shape. - The spruce, pine, juniper and fir evergreen trees have many subtypes that make up their particular species. The spruce has Norway, white, black hills, Colorado, Colorado blue, baby blue eyes, and bakeri, as well as Hoopsii, Fat Albert, Iseli Fastigiate and R H Montgomery. The pine subtypes include (but are not limited to) the Eastern white pine, Scotch pine, Austrian pine and bristle cone pine. Juniper subtypes boast names like moon glow, skyrocket, Wichita blue and Rocky Mountain juniper.
- Evergreen plant types include some of the same evergreen tree type names, like arborvitae (Emerald, globe and techny), firs (Douglas, balsam and white), and spruce (Norway and black hills). But there are other types too, like the hemlocks (Canada) and the yews (Japanese spreading and dwarf, as well as Taunton spreading). There are seven Juniper-type evergreen plants: Savin, green globe, Rocky Mountain, Wilton carpet, Prince of Wales, Sargent, and Pfitzer. These range in growth rate from slow to medium. The six evergreen pine plants--Austrian, mugo, ponderosa, red, Scotch, and white--also have a slow to medium growth rate.
