    • 1). Restrain your python so it won't become agitated. Probing involves inserting a small metal rod into the opening on the base of your python's tail. It is recommended that you have a partner assist you by gently restraining your python's head and upper body so it cannot coil and bite you, or hurt itself while the probe is inserted. If you do not have a partner to help you, a restraint tube is sufficient. Make sure your python is belly up.

    • 2). Bend the tip of your python's tail back to expose the cloacal opening. This is where you will be inserting the sexing probe. For your snake's comfort, apply lubricant to the probe. Ball-tipped probes are recommended because they are easier to insert. Insert the probe as carefully and gently as possible so as not to cause tissue damage. This is an extremely sensitive region.

    • 3). Feel for an opening on either side of the tail just inside of the cloacal opening. These pockets exist for both genders, but males are substantially deeper than females. After finding the pocket, slide the probe carefully toward the tip of the tail. It will measure approximately 8 to 16 subcaudal scales for a male snake, but only one or two for a female, according to teh website Vida Preciosa International.
