Legend of Trevi Fountain

103 5
The first thing that strikes the visitor about the Trevi fountain is its enormity.
Standing high at 85 feet and a width of 65 feet, this marvel of a fountain simply takes your breath away.
Legend has it that if you throw a coin into the fountain with your back to the Trevi, with your right hand over the left shoulder, it ensures a return to Rome.
Legends change with time, and strengthening further beliefs attached to the Trevi can be attributed to the film "Three Coins in the Fountain.
People now believe that throwing one coin ensures a return to Rome, a second coin means a budding romance in the offing, and a third coin leads you up the marriage altar.
Though the legend has been in place for long, people may or may not believe in it.
Even though tourists throng the Trevis Fountain in hordes, many of them may indulge in the fun of throwing coins without belief in the legend.
That accounts for many tourists not throwing coins with the right hand over the left shoulder.
Belief or no belief, what matters in the end is that the Trevi is a good money grosser.
Small coins thrown into the fountain leads to a sizeable amount of money collected by the end of the day.
Rough estimates say that around EUR3,000 per day is fished out of the Trevi.
The money is well used to fund the Red Cross and other charities including a supermarket meant for the poor.
