How to Refill a Cannon Ink Cartridge

    • 1). Lay down brown paper on a desk or table to establish a work area. The paper is to soak up any spilled ink and protect the surface from stains.

    • 2). Find the refill dimple on your cartridge. It is a small divot on the top of the cartridge. Your printer refill kit will provide a diagram that shows you where this divot is located. On the PG-40 cartridge for instance, it is near the bottom right below the letter "B."

    • 3). Poke a hole into this dimple with the puncture tool provided in your refill kit. If one is not included, use a thumb drill or large sewing needle. The hole must punch right through the cartridge exterior into the chamber beneath it.

    • 4). Fill the syringe in the kit with ink by inserting the syringe needle into the ink bottle. Make sure you are filling the syringe with the same color ink the cartridge holds. The cartridge will list the color of ink it holds on the top. Black cartridges have only one refill hole. For color cartridges, look to your refill kit for instructions as to where the holes are located on the cartridge. There are three holes on color Canon cartridges, one for cyan, magenta and yellow. You must fill each hole with the proper color.

    • 5). Place the syringe needle in the hole and then inject the ink into the cartridge at a very slow pace to prevent splatter and bubbling. Cover the hole with a piece of tape if you plan on storing the cartridge.
