Cat Scratching Post

Cat scratching is part of the cats feline nature.
Cats will scratch without really caring what it is they are shredding to bits in the process, scratching is part of their make up.
Cats essentially scratch to remove dirt from their claws and keep them trim.
Your cat scratching at the furnishings around the home however is not an acceptable form of behaviour and a habit you should want to get your cat out of doing sooner rather than later.
The easiest way to stop your cat from tearing your house to shreds is quite simply to buy your little feline friend a cat scratching post.
Several are recommended placed in different areas of the house, especially if you have more than one cat in the household.
Another reason why your cat scratches, is to mark his territory.
The act of scratching releases a scent from a gland in the paw and so by doing so he is informing the rest of the household that he has passed through.
It is a good idea therefore to position the scratching posts in the high traffic areas of the house as it is these areas that he is likely to scratch in the most.
A cat scratching post should also be positioned near his sleeping area as like his human counterpart your cat loves to have a good stretch after waking from his sleep.
So a post tall enough to allow him to reach up and arch his back is ideal.
The material that the post is made of is important.
Given that one reason for scratching is to clean the claws, heavyset coarse fabric such as burlap is ideal.
If you have wooden fencing in your garden or outside area of the house you may have noticed this to be another place your cat loves to scratch at.
Even an old log brought in from the outdoors is sufficient though a scratching post can be better placed to look more aesthetically pleasing in your home.
