Lehigh County, Pennsylvania Court Jury Requirements

The Lehigh County general jurisdiction trial court located in Allentown, Penn., summons about 2,000 jurors each month, selecting them randomly from driver's license lists. After prospective jurors are given an orientation, the court selects juror panels for various courtrooms. If you serve on a jury at this court, there are certain requirements to keep in mind. - Juries in the Lehigh County Court will serve until a trial concludes. Typically, trials run two to three days, the court advises. This includes the day the court selects the jury. Trials begin immediately after jury selection. You can be held in contempt of court if you do not respond to a summons for jury duty.
- Working hours for Lehigh County Court run from 8.30 a.m. through 4.30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The court can require juries to serve after 4.30 p.m if a trial requires it. The court allows a jury to take breaks, including at least an hour off for lunch. Under Pennsylvania law, as of 2010, the court pays juries $9.00 a day for the first three days of service and $25.00 for each day of service after that.
- Lehigh County Court requires juries to dress formally for court, as if for a job interview. If you have a conflict relating to the day of jury duty, you can send in a request for postponement when you receive your summons. The court has a liberal postponement policy and will also consider last minute requests for postponement. However, the court will only grant one postponement. There is no legal exemption for senior citizens from jury duty, under Pennsylvania law. However, if you are a senior citizen, you could ask the court for an exemption. The Lehigh County Court says it is liberal about exempting senior citizens from jury service if they request it.
