    • 1). Use a clean rag to brush away any grass, dirt and debris that is attached to the weed trimmer. If necessary, use a mild degreasing cleaner to remove oil and grease stains.

    • 2). Empty the gas tank for gas-powered weed trimmers. The easiest way to do this is to use the trimmer until it runs out of gas.

    • 3). Change the spark plug on a gas-powered weed trimmer. Changing the spark plug once per year will ensure proper operation.

    • 4). Change the oil in a gas-powered trimmer. Drain the existing oil by inserting a funnel and turning the trimmer on its side. Replace with the type and amount of oil recommended by the weed trimmer's manufacturer.

    • 5). Detach the electrical line from electric trimmers and fold neatly for storage.

    • 6). Store the trimmer in an upright manner by hanging it on a hook or a nail.

    • 7). Dispose of old oil by taking it to a recycling facility.
