Regulatory

• Every horse racing steward finds himself charged with ensuring that all races get run fairly and according to the rules of the particular event. In the case of a dispute or protest, for example, the steward reviews the videotape of the event and renders a final decision on the outcome. In other cases, he observes various elements of the race, from the opening of the starting gate to the positions of the horses, to confirm no violations taken place. Finally, he regulates betting at the race track so it runs smoothly and fairly.
  
  

Veterinary

• A horse racing steward oversees and assists with various veterinary aspects at the track, especially where drug testing is concerned. For example, he will oversee the sampling of bodily fluids, receive the results from the veterinarians and follow up with owners, trainers and jockeys about any suspicious results, especially in those cases where a horse has tested positive for illegal substances.
  
  

Development

• In many areas, a horse racing steward also assists with the development of other professionals' racing careers. He can develop, give, score and deliver training examinations for a variety of careers, especially when applicants -- such as an assistant trainer or assistant jockey -- try to enter the world of horse racing.
  
  

Management

• In general, a horse racing steward oversees all regulatory aspects of the races and reports to the appropriate Board of Stewards. In this capacity, he has to liaise with the public, law enforcement officers, owners, trainers and jockeys, making sure that each person plays his role fairly and effectively so that races run as intended.
