    • 1). Visit a dermatologist or your doctor, as severe acne usually needs very aggressive treatment with antibiotics and medication like isotretinoin. These medications start to eliminate cysts and large pustules within approximately three to five days. However, if you are pregnant, you must inform your doctor, as isotretinoin cannot be used by pregnant women. Some types of acne are resistant to antibiotics, so your doctor may need to prescribe antibiotics that specifically address your type of acne.

    • 2). Change your facial cleansing routine. Consult with your doctor on facial cleansing routines. Avoid excessive facial scrubbing and washing as this does not prevent or cure large acne problems, but can irritate the area and make the acne even larger. Ask your dermatologist to recommend a mild facial cleanser. Apply a small dab of cleanser daily, following the bottle instructions, and rinse with warm water. This type of facial cleansing will eliminate the excess sebum and help you control the acne.

    • 3). Eliminate junk food and oily foods from your diet. Although acne is not caused by any specific type of food, the condition can be aggravated by the food you eat. Avoid fried foods, chocolate and empty calories. Add fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and organic foods to your diet.

    • 4). Make lifestyle changes that involve exercise and relaxation techniques. Stress tends to increase acne and make it larger and more severe. Stress prevention techniques and daily exercise helps reduce acne problems. Acne causing bacteria does not survive well in an alkaline and oxygen rich environment, and the best way to oxygenate and alkalize your skin is to exercise.
