How to Stop ACH Payments

104 10
    • 1). Contact the institution that will be requesting the transaction to see if the payment can be stopped. If this is a monthly transfer, determine if you are canceling a single transfer or ceasing all future transactions. Offer alternative methods of payment. In some cases, the institution may not be able to stop the transaction. This normally happens if the transaction is scheduled to happen on either the current day or the following day.

    • 2). Contact your banking institution where the withdrawal will be debited and request a stop payment of ACH. Most institutions will ask you to fill out a form to complete this process. The information required for the form include the transaction amount, the date the transaction is set to occur and the name of the institution requesting the transfer. Your financial institution will charge you a stop-payment fee.

    • 3). Monitor your bank accounts for at least one week after the transaction was supposed to have occurred. Make sure that the company requesting the transfer has not resent the payment request on another date. Some companies systems will automatically try to send another request after non-payment.
