Installing Tonneau Covers in Cold Weather

104 5
    • Tonneau covers are excellent to use on any truck. They keep debris out of the bed and protect what ever is in there from rain, ice and snow. That's why they are great to use in cold weather. However, installing them when it is cold can be a problem. The biggest issue is caused by the contraction of not just the tonneau cover but the truck bed walls. There are easy ways to overcome this, however.

    Installation Tricks

    • The best place to install a tonneau cover in cold weather is inside. Just heat your garage to a comfortable 65 degrees using a space heater and fan, then park the truck inside and let it sit for a few hours. Keep the tonneau cover in here too. The truck should be up to room temperature after an hour, but allow additional time to let the side walls expand. Then, install the cover.

    After Installation

    • The period after the installation is just as important. You should let the truck sit a while so the cover has time to adjust and stretch to the vehicle's dimensions. Leave the heater on and keep the room warm during this time. After a few hours, you can start to reduce the temperature and let the truck come back down to normal temperature. The bed walls are going to expand and contract quite a bit, especially if the truck is parked in a heated garage.
