Becoming a Lawyer Within Canada

Many people often know the success rate within lawyers and it is an ever growing industry making some lawyers millionaires within a short period of time. Lawyers have often enjoyed success from the start because no matter what type of lawyers you are, there is often a huge demand. You might ask... how come everyone is not becoming a lawyer? This is a good question especially when you have already heard how busy and successful they are. The answer is very simple and it`s because some people are not up for the intense studying involved for several years. If you have had good marks all throughout school then the issue is that you simply do not know the process involved in becoming licensed. Since the law society within any given country has allowed for you to enter law school within another state or province, sometimes having your credits transferred can often be a tedious and difficult task. Let`s look at the process involved within Canada or specifically the province of Ontario.

Many lawyers have done well within Canada because this is a country often seen with growth potential. As new immigrants arrive they are looking to invest in property and even start their own business. In both case you require a business lawyer and real estate lawyer. With growth come opportunity and the chance for many lawyers to succeed.
First, after spending four years studying any undergraduate degree and if your marks are high enough you can apply for law school. Many people believe that during law school is where you study to specialize within a certain area which is untrue since that is done during the articling stage where you work with a lawyer in a specific niche. If you go to law school within Ontario and plan on practicing within here then the process is very simple as you go to law school, article for a few years and then write your bar exam. Many lawyers article with several different lawyers and then decide what field they enjoy working in. The problem is what do you do if you have studied abroad and want to get licensed within Ontario?

If you study abroad the process is typically the same however there is something else added which is to get your equivalency determined. For example, if you go to law school within Europe and complete your education then you will need to bring your transcript back to Ontario and determine the equivalency for those credits. The law society within Ontario will determine if the courses you took abroad translate to credits that you would have completed within a local law school. Sometimes they will give you credit for several of them and expect you to take specific exams that will help you pickup on those credits. The exams required are spread out throughout the year and you can take one every 3 months if you have the time and patience to study for them. Either way, once you have completed the required exams you can then apply for the Ontario Bar and finally get licensed.

Once licensed you will probably end up working for a lawyer to build your skill set and experience however this is probably the best time for you to determine what type of lawyer you would like to be and grow your skill set levels.
