How to Make a Base Out of Brick for a Wood Column
- 1). Arrange the bricks around the base of the wood column to determine the arrangement. Take care to stagger the bricks at the corners so that the bricks can interlock around the corners.
- 2). Mix the mortar with water in a large bucket so that it is easy to scoop up.
- 3). Remove the bricks from the around the wood column and spread the mortar on the sides of the wood column so that the bricks will be held to the column as well as each other. Try not to spread the mortar any higher than the bricks will go.
- 4). Position the first layer of bricks around the base of the wood column. Place mortar between each brick. Use the trowel to spread mortar on the top of this layer of bricks. The mortar should be at least 1/4-inch thick. Position the second layer of bricks so that the seams of the bricks are staggered and the corners interlock. Repeat this process until the layers of brick have been laid.
- 5). Drag the edge of the putty knife along the surface of the bricks to remove any excess mortar.
- 6). Use a large sponge and warm water to wash away any remaining excess mortar. Allow the mortar to dry completely.
