Triball Madrid

106 6
When I last visited Madrid, everyone was talking about something called Triball, or Tribal. Some said it was an area, others said it was a business. Often people weren't sure how it was spelled. So what is Triball?

What is Triball?

Triball, written by its owners as "triBall" (notice the small 't' and big 'B'), is short for "Triángulo de Ballesta" or "Ballesta Triangle". It means one thing to its owners, something else to its critics, and a bit of both to everyone else.
Triball started out as a group of business in Malasaña, the trendy district of Madrid.

More specifically, it is in the formerly 'dead' space between Gran Via and the nightlife area around metro Tribunal and Plaza Dos de Mayo. Originally made up of a conglomerate of vintage clothes stores, Triball has now grown to include restaurants, beauty salons and other businesses.

This part of town, particularly around Calle de la Luna, has always been famous for drug addicts and prostitution. The prostitutes still hang around, but the area is largely drug free now. Partly to make a break with this seedy past, and partly due to the marketing power of the people behind Triball, people are now referring to this part of Madrid as "Triball", rather than "that place where all the drug addicts used to hang out".

Inverted snobs and anti-capitalists see the raised quality of life in this area since Triball arrived as "gentrification". But even they have begrudgingly started referring to the area as "Triball".

Soon I'll bring you details of some of the best bars, shops and restaurants in the area.
