What Is Dual Core & Core 2 Duo?
- Both the Intel Pentium Dual-Core and the Intel Core 2 Duo were introduced in the same year, 2006. The Pentium Dual-Core has since made way for additional related series, including the Celeron Dual-Core, Core i3, and Pentium Dual-Core Mobile. The Core 2 Duo also spawned several related series of processors, like the Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo Mobile.
- The Pentium Dual-Core series has 19 individual model types. The series' highest potential processing speed is 3.06 GHz, comparable to the Core 2 Quad's highest, at a speed of 3.33 GHz. The Dual-Core series falls behind in maximum bus speed capability, with models that can produce a maximum bus speed of 1066 MHz. The series is also behind in L2 cache size, with models that max out at 2 MB. However, the Dual-Core series has models with up to 3 MB of L3 cache, while the Core 2 Duo has no L3 cache capabilities. Pentium Dual Cores use two different socket types, Socket 775 and Socket 1156.
- The Core 2 Duo series is made up of nearly 30 models. As previously mentioned, Core 2 Duo processors can reach processing speeds of up to 3.33 GHz. They also are able to reach bus speeds of 1333 MHz. All Core 2 Duo processors have a Socket 775 socket type. They have greater L2 cache speeds than the Dual Core series, with capabilities of up to 6 MB.
