Dentists are well trained oral health care practitioners.
They went to school for many years in order to perform preventative maintenance, diagnose disease and treat any and all problems concerning teeth, gums and mouth.
The initials DDS stand for Doctor of Dental Surgery.
In order to obtain the right to place these initials behind one's name, four years of undergraduate university work must be completed and then several more years at a reputable dental college.
This education will include lots of coursework and class hours in academic studies such as chemistry, anatomy, biology, physiology and mathematics.
They will also put multiple hours in at the college's clinic gaining experience working with patients.
Here are 10 things that oral health practitioners want their patients to do: 1) Brush your teeth: Brushing should be done after every snack and meal.
A minimum of twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening before bed should do the trick.
2) Floss often: Flossing is nearly as important as brushing.
Without this hygiene ritual, plaque and decay can build up in all the nooks and crannies.
3) Eat healthy food: The saying "we are what we eat" is so true.
Eating a nutritious diet of whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins and plenty of water will create strong teeth as well as a optimally functioning body.
4) Stay away from sugary sodas and candies as much as possible: An occasional treat is fine but daily doses of sweets are decay and cavities just waiting to happen.
5) Get to the dentist regularly: The recommendation from most DDS professionals is to have an exam and cleaning every six months.
Cleaning is usually done by a dental hygienist and is especially helpful in getting rid of plaque and getting the gums in good shape.
6) Don't procrastinate: If problems are occurring inside your mouth, don't delay.
Get to the dentist in order to take care of the problem.
Decay and disease won't go away on their own - instead they just continue to get worse.
A simple cavity can turn into a root canal or lost tooth.
7) Keep your teeth throughout life: Did you know that many people have lost all or most of their teeth before they start collecting social security? With proper care, this doesn't have to happen.

8) Watch out for those stains! Coffee, tea and cigarettes can stain and discolor teeth into an unsightly brownish yellow.

9) Early orthodontia: If your kids need to have their smiles straightened, start early.
It's wise to have this started as early as age 7 in order to have a more effective and shorter course of treatment.
10) No bedtime bottles for those babies: Putting babies to bed with a bottle of juice can cause a terrible condition called "bottle mouth.
" Just say "no" to bedtime bottles.
Dentists would be happier if patients did these 10 things.
