- 1). Power wash the siding using water and a non- phosphate detergent. Alternatively, you can hand wash the siding using a sponge. Rinse the siding after washing it.
- 2). Scrub the siding with a medium-grade sandpaper wherever you see chipped or peeling paint. Remove caulk with a wet rag.
- 3). Remove white oxidation present on any exposed metal. Oxidation occurs when the siding wears down to the metal underneath and erodes from being exposed to the elements. Use steel wool to buff the metal until the oxidation is gone.
- 4). Prime the aluminum siding before applying the top coat. Use latex metal primer if the aluminum siding is in decent shape, without exposed metal. If the siding has shown oxidization, the ammonia in the latex metal primer will react poorly with the exposed metal. Use an alkyd-based primer thinned to the rate of one-part paint thinner to four-parts primer instead. Use an airless paint sprayer or paint brush to apply the primer and allow it to dry overnight.
- 5). Use a 100 percent acrylic latex exterior paint on top of the primer. Apply the paint with a paint brush or airless paint sprayer.
