Interior woodworking projects can change your house from plain to extraordinary. Whether a job has practical application or is for aesthetic purpose only, putting woodworking skills to work can change your living space. Always plan carefully for projects, taking into consideration the costs and time to complete the job, including the tools needed. Consider the skill level of the project and ask for assistance for larger jobs.

    Chair Rails

    • Chair rails act as wall dividers and protection for the paint or wallpaper in the room. These rails are sometimes made from wallpaper or simple painted lines. Create chair rails from wood for a decorative interior woodworking project. Decide on the width and thickness you desire. If the room is spacious, thick and wide rails work well. For a narrower or smaller room, delicate rails made from thin wood keep the decorations appropriate for the space. Measure your width of your wall and cut your boards to the appropriate lengths. Use a hand or electric planer to smooth the tops of the word and round or smooth the edges. A router, or cutting tool for making grooves and lines in the wood, can be used to make designs in the rails. Varnish or paint the rails to match the room for which they are intended.

    Shelves

    • For adding space to your home, shelves are simple interior woodworking projects to attempt. Store purchased or pre-made shelves often do not fit a home's space, or let useful space go to waste by being to narrow or too short. Create shelves that fit top to bottom by measuring your space available and cutting the wood to size. Always smooth your edges with a planer and finish to match your room. Play with angles to create corner shelves. Experiment with a router to make oval or odd shapes. For a beginner, purchase shelving hardware to hang your shelves. For more advanced woodworkers, created L-shaped, jointed pieces for wall hanging.

    Platform Tables

    • A block or platform table, used for decoration in the living area or family room, is a project for the ambitious interior woodworker. Using large chunks of wood to start a project takes time, but the end result is a durable piece to last for years. Begin with a large block of unfinished wood. Ordering form a lumberyard may be necessary. Have the block cut several inches larger than needed for the completed project. Smooth the edges and the sides of the block. Paint or stain the wood to match the intended room. Create a top from plywood. Cut into the desired shape, smooth and finish. Alternatively, a glass top, cut to fit the block, will accent the beauty of the woodwork.
