According to the medical literature, cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of premature death in the United States, accounting for almost 500,000 deaths each year, which represents more than 5 million years of potential life lost. Medical costs directly related to smoking amount to $50 billion annually. For these reasons, Medscape Pulmonary Medicine established, and regularly updates, the Smoking Resource Center.
This month, we are busy planning to cover the 24th International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine, taking place March 30-April 2, 2004 in Brussels, Belgium. We are also looking forward to covering the 100th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society in Orlando, Florida, May 21-26, 2004. If you are planning to attend, make plans early.
Conference Coverage from the 33rd Annual Congress of the Society of Critical Care Medicine will be posted shortly. Stay tuned. In the meantime, our current Conference Coverage includes Highlights of CHEST 2003: 69th Annual Meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians. In this section, you decide on the topics and you control the discussion.
We now have a number of useful MEDLINE searches on a number of topics. Our latest MEDLINE Search is on the incidence of avian influenza. You can also read the MEDLINE searches on maternal smoking, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sarcoidosis, sinusitis, and other topics.
