How to Apply Lime & Fertilizer at the Same Time
- 1). Obtain a soil test kit from a garden supply store or the local offices of most cooperative extensions. Collect a soil sample following the instructions provided with the kit and send it for testing at the supplier's laboratory. Use the results from the soil test to determine how much lime and fertilizer to add to the soil.
- 2). Calculate the amount of lime and fertilizer necessary, using the results of the soil test. If the analysis says to add 40 lbs. of lime per 1,000 square feet of yard, and the yard is 500 square feet, you need 20 lbs. of lime. Eighty lbs. of lime would be needed for a 2,000-square-foot lawn. Perform the same calculations to determine the type and amount of fertilizer needed.
- 3). Add the lime to a spreader. Travel the yard in straight, adjacent rows to ensure even coverage throughout the area. Adjust the spreader's feed rate as needed. Continue until lime is applied to the entire area.
- 4). Rinse out the spreader with a garden hose, then dry it with a rag.
- 5). Add the fertilizer to the spreader. Spread the fertilizer the same way you spread the lime. Continue until fertilizer is applied to the entire area.
- 6). Water the lawn thoroughly with a garden hose to remove the lime and fertilizer from any foliage and work them into the soil.
