How to Plan a Trip to Wilson Creek, N.C.

104 3
    • 1). Choose a date to visit. Wilson Creek is beautiful year-round, but certain activities, such as trout fishing, can't be done all year long. If you are looking to get away from the world, avoid holiday weekends such as July 4 and Labor Day.

    • 2). Decide how primitive you'd like to make your experience. There are campgrounds that offer basic amenities such as indoor plumbing, or you can hike out into Pisgah National Forest and camp with no amenities at all. There also are cabin rentals available in the area. Call the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce for information about campgrounds and cabin rentals (see Resources below). If camping isn't quite your style, check into one of several hotels in nearby Lenoir.

    • 3). Pack the essentials. Whether you plan to spend the day or camp for several days, pack essential camping supplies such as water and food, because the nearest town is about 30 minutes away. There are several stores available on Brown Mountain Beach Road, but they have only the bare minimum and charge for the convince of avoiding a trip to town.

    • 4). Plan for an activity-filled trip. There are many swimming holes, hiking trails and fishing spots along Wilson Creek. Most have accessible parking and bathrooms. The activities available have a variety of skill levels, and there are beaches where children can swim under the watchful eye of their parents and rapids that offer some of the country's best venues for kayaking.
