Sometimes we can see our house is invaded by acquisitive insects.
Some of them are quite harmless, as they severely weaken the structure of the home, and they often go unnoticed until the damage is done.
This is the dry rot insect.
Dry Rot refers to the decay of the timber in buildings and other wooden structures caused by fungi.
The term is most commonly used in the reference to the decay of the building timbers.
It has the ability to travel through building materials other than timber giving outbreaks the potential to spread quickly through a building.
It spreads by spores which are present in most buildings.
The other name of brown rot is Serpula Lacrymans, a group of fungi which digest the cellulose and hemicelluloses in timber.
It spreads rapidly on timbers with a 30 % to 40 % moisture.
It carries the moisture to the relative drier timber which is subsequently attacked.
To search for new timber it can also grow over the brickwork and masonry walls thus damaging them.
Dry rot treatment refers to the technique used to eliminate the dry rot fungus and facilitate the damage done by the fungus to the wooden furniture.
It can be eradicated by controlling the environment of the area in which it is growing in terms of reduced moisture levels and increased ventilation.
The first step of treatment is to make the necessary repairs to the building defects like blocked air bricks, missing slates etc.
the first step is to use the chemical fungicides.
The next step is to control the fungus by controlling the environment conditions.
We can also treat the dry rot through extreme heat.
It is always suggested that when the it is found in the houses, plaster and wall covering should be stripped back to a meter past the infestations in all direction and whole area treated.
