Cats and Dreams and Christmas Ornaments
I had a dream...
no really--I had a dream...
not like the "Field of Dreams" dream but a nighttime dream! The dream really began, as most dreams sometimes do, before I went to bed; I had spent an hour or so reading through a newsletter about some of the things to be watchful of when you have a cat or dog in the house at Christmas.
In our case, we have four cats! There was a time when we put up a Christmas tree; when we had nick knacks sitting around on shelves, when plants graced our table or TV and when I had a whole bookshelf-stand full of house plants.
Alas, no more! Some people apparently get along quite well with a combination of cats and "do dads;" we do not! And it's just as well.
We learned early on that sometimes cats and Christmas ornaments do not mix.
After pulling tinsel from a cat's mouth on more than one occasion and waking during the night on another to the "tinkling of the bells" to discover a cat lodged firmly in the Christmas tree, luckily before it fell (the tree, not the cat!), we've chosen to forgo the usual such Christmas amenities.
At least for now! And the dream I had the other night just helped to reinforce for us our decision.
The dream began like this...
in his usual nosy way Mikey was helping us decorate the tree.
It was then time to put the string of Christmas lights on the tree; he butted his nose in and to our dismay somehow got the string of lights wrapped around his neck.
Now, he did look quite smart and colorful (we use the colored, blinking lights), but when he scampered away with the lights trailing behind him I could not see the funny! Particularly because I was concerned he might get the cord caught on something-maybe a chair leg, or when he was under the table, or in the shower (he likes to get his drink out of the faucet), or caught on a sink faucet when he jumped on the vanity to preen.
The possibilities are endless! He is after all quite the traveler! Luckily, I woke up just then in the middle of my contemplation, to check on Mikey as he slept soundly in his bed.
Or was it mine? That experience, though not real, reminded me that even though there's no longer a Christmas tree in our home, others may benefit from knowing some of the dangers that may exist for "furry felines" at Christmas...
not just from lights and ornaments but also from foods and maybe even the cold if they manage to get outside in their quest to see Santa.
