Carbon Monoxide Detector Levels
- Carbon monoxide alarms should be manufactured to meet U.L. standard 2034. Check that this is marked on the packaging. An alarm manufactured to standard should be activated by a CO concentration of no less than 70 ppm. Normal levels near a properly adjusted gas appliance range from 5 to 15 ppm.
- Most healthy people will feel no ill effects up to 70 ppm. Above this concentration you are likely to experience mild symptoms of headache, fatigue and nausea. Concentrations above 150 ppm can prove fatal.
- Children can be vulnerable to lower levels of carbon monoxide.sleeping angel image by Vanessa van Rensburg from Fotolia.com
People who are already frail or medically vulnerable can feel ill effects from lower concentrations of carbon monoxide. Pregnant women, children and anyone with angina or other heart-related conditions could be at risk from concentrations as low as 30 ppm. - A carbon monoxide detector is no substitute for regular maintenance.wood burning stove image by Paula Gent from Fotolia.com
Since detectors vary, and some people can be vulnerable to concentrations of CO lower than the industry standard, a detector should never be a substitute for regular maintenance of appliances in the home. Concentrations near a poorly maintained appliance may reach 30 ppm, enough to represent a hazard to the very vulnerable.
