    Heat Gun

    • A heat gun is a useful tool to have around the garage for both applying and removing decals, as well as for warming up components before fitting them to the car. The heat gun can be used to remove decals by setting it to a low heat and warming the edges of the vinyl tape. This will start the edges peeling so they can be lifted up and soften the adhesive underneath.

    Hair Dryer

    • A standard hair dryer is an alternative to the heat gun, which is a more specialized piece of equipment. Using a hair dryer, heat up the tape in the same way as with the heat gun. This has the same effect on the edges of the vinyl and the adhesive. If a hair dryer is not available to borrow, buy a cheap one from an electrical store. It does not need to be powerful or generate a lot of heat to do this job.

    Paint Stripper

    • Once the edges of the tape start to peel away, it should be possible to pull the vinyl away from the bodywork using fingernails. If there are stubborn parts of the tape, use a metal paint stripper to pry it away. Do this carefully so as not to damage the paint. Pull away slowly and try and to take the decals off in one piece.

    Adhesive

    • After the decals have been removed, a sticky adhesive residue can be left on the bodywork. Pour some solvent cleaner on a sponge and rub the affected areas and wash off with water afterwards. Make sure the solvent is safe to use on paint.
