    Wilderness Awareness School

    • Summer camps at Wilderness Awareness School take place in and around Seattle, Washington. Camps for kids and teens are available, including a Survival Skills Overnight Camp for people ages 11 to 14 and Teen Wolf Tracking Camp for people ages 13 to 18. Programs are designed to cultivate an appreciation for nature, community and self. Teens learn about plants, mammals, tracking and survival skills from trained instructors. The emphasis is on establishing a lifelong connection Earth.

    Sea Turtle Camp

    • Sea Turtle Camp in southeastern North Carolina is a marine sciences summer camp where campers get hands-on experience studying sea turtles, marine biology, sandstone ecology and dune ecology. Teens go on nature walks, kayak trips, volunteer at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, dig for clams, go on watch for night time hatching, take surfing lessons and attend seminars. Teens can earn 20 hours of community service credit by participating in this camp. Campers may enroll in a six or 11-day program.

    Acadia Institute of Oceanography

    • AIO is a marine science summer camp based in Seal Harbor, Maine. Sessions are either one or two-weeks long and require no previous marine sciences experience. Campers conduct experiments in a laboratory, collect specimens at the beach, go on boat trips with lobster fishermen, participate in geology hikes and night walks, go snorkeling, study tide pool diversity and go on field trips to the nearby town of Bar Harbor. High school-level biology or chemistry is preferred for older campers (ages 15 to 19) to attend advanced sessions.

    Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies

    • This West Virginia camp began in 1963 in a secluded sanctuary of the Appalachian Mountains. The camp offers three summer sessions for campers ages 11 to 15. While at camp, teens spend time studying plant and animal species and their interrelatedness with each other and the surrounding environment. Campers take and analyze samples of pond scum, draw their observations, build bridges and go bird watching. They also go on hikes, make paper, paint T-shirts, climb trees, participate in cook-outs, put on skits and play games.

    The Children of the Earth Foundation

    • Children of the Earth summer camp offers teens to learn about stewardship of the environment through tracking and wilderness living skills. Programs are offered in locations throughout the country and range from weekend-long camps to week-long adventures. Campers up to age 17 learn about medicinal plants, bow-making, hide tanning, basket making, primitive cooking, fire making and drumming. A variety of programs are available, including sleep-away camps for teens, as well as family programs.

    New York State Environmental Education Camps

    • DEC camps provide summer programs to people ages 12 to 17. Programs are broken down into groups based on age and are located in various parts of northeastern New York State. Campers learn about environmental conservation and sportsman skills, such as bow hunting and hunter safety. Campers also participate in games and hands-on lessons that are designed to teach them about forests, water quality and an appreciation of natural resources. Teens go swimming, hiking and canoeing and learn outdoor survival skills.
