How to Write an Invention Report
- 1). Write down the inventor's name, birth date, place of birth and contact information. Name your invention. Most inventors conveniently name their inventions by their function or use to begin with. For instance, if you have invented a device that counts widgets, it can be called a widget counter. Be sure to name and give the contact information of every person who has helped you with this invention, if you have had partners.

Describe your invention technically or mechanically. (This is a mega-important step.) Tell how it works in step-by-step detail. Remember, this may turn out to be the rough framework upon which your patent claim may rest. - 3). Include copies of your sketches and all other drawings you may have made during the invention process. Be sure to label the various parts with numbers and/or letters. Provide a reading key to the side or at the bottom of your drawings. Number the pages for quick reference and to be sure you are both looking at the same thing. Do so to limit confusion when discussing your drawing with someone on the phone or through email.
- 4). Write your use description. Tell how your invention is to be used by people who will buy and use it. Include every use it was designed and intended for, if your invention is a multi-use item.

Tell how your invention helps or improves the lives of those who will buy and use it. Describe its uniqueness, or how it is different than what may be similar and already in use. Identify what problem it solves or lessens. - 6). Write your statement of exclusivity. State that as far as you know, you are the inventor(s) of this product, that there are no other previous versions already invented and/or in use. Mention also whether or not you have ever publicized your invention to any other person or entity. Compose your oath statement (that you have stated only the truth about the above described invention). Sign and date your statement of authenticity. Check the laws of your particular state to confirm the above steps are applicable and sufficient for writing your own invention report.
