When caring for your cat it is very important to look at all aspects of a cat's personality in order to fully please them.
Aside from the standard "come feed me I am hungry" actions an animal displays, remember, a cat is much different than a dog.
This has been proven time and time again by their independence and sassiness.
However, do not mistake this for meaning they do not need or want the TLC that a dog so blatantly asks for.
A cat does much want your love and affection; they just don't feel the need to beg for it in order to get it.

they like to sleep 19 hours a day (minus the occasional potty breaks and feeding times) and then roam around exploring the rest of the time So, it's all about reading your cat and giving them what they want.
If your cat asks for attention, by all means, give it to them! If you try and pick them up and they fight you, please put them down and don't get mad at them for it.
Some cats just don't like being held.
If they don't, then find out what they do like, maybe play time with something as simple as string.
Or maybe something simple face scratching around the cheeks and under the chin would suffice.
Even the most independent of cats can't deny a face scratch, especially if you catch them at their most content state; when they are relaxing or sleeping.
Just to let them know you are there and you can provide them with love and fun as much or as little as they require it.
Cats also seems to like soft, sweet voices.
It is very inviting to them, much like talking to a baby.
It is non threatening and warm.
It's all about studying your cat and doing some research with trial and error to see what they like the most.
Also, kitties much appreciate a nice fresh place to go to the bathroom and clean fresh water and food put in a particular spot every day.
These are territory zones for them.
Plus, if your kitty is nice enough to not go to the bathroom all over your place and nice enough to cover it in the box so it does not stink so badly, shouldn't you be nice enough to keep things clean and fresh for them?
