How to Identify Voles
- 1). Take notice to the size and appearance of the rodent. Voles are very small and resemble mice size. They are no bigger than 8 inches long and have stout bodies.
- 2). Analyze the appearance of the rodent. Voles have small round eyes, nose and ears along with a short hairy tail. Their feet have four toes and are about 1/3-inch long. Voles range in color from light gray to dark brown.
- 3). Look for runways on the ground. Runways may be hidden by layers of grass. The runway connects the vole from one tunnel to another, where they live. The tunnels are no bigger than 2 inches in diameter. The vole may other tunnels created by moles or shrews, bit will make other small tunnels nearby to have several entrances and exits.
- 4). Search for dead plants. If you have a vegetable garden, trees, or shrubbery that are dyeing, chances are you have voles living in the ground. Voles will eat plant roots along with dead animals and fruits. Analyze your small trees for missing bark as this is another indication you have voles.
