How to Plant a Melrose Tree
- 1). Walk across your lawn to find a high area or slope for planting your apple trees. Avoid planting your Melrose apple tree in a low-lying area where cool air settles and creates a detrimental frost pocket. Select a spot in full sunlight and away from any shade from other outdoor structures.
- 2). Dig a hole twice the diameter as your Melrose tree's root ball and 2 feet deep. Spread the bottom of the hole with loose soil and scrape the sides of the hole to help your apple tree establish roots.
- 3). Place your Melrose apple tree inside the hole. Using your hands, spread out its roots. Add soil to the hole a little bit at a time and pat down the soil to reduce air pockets. Make sure that the graft union is 2 inches above the soil line.
- 4). Water the tree thoroughly to moisten the soil.
- 5). Spread a 3-inch layer of mulch 3 inches from the base of the Melrose apple tree out to under its drip line or the area directly under its outermost branches.
