101 5
The popularity of E-commerce is increasing by leaps and bounds everyday. Enterprises are more focussed on sales through their online shopping portals and those that are not are fast becoming so. E-commerce frees enterprises and their customers from the shackles of geographical and availability limitations and opens a whole new world of possibilities for both.

Nevertheless, everything comes as a package of pros and cons and the downside of E-commerce is that despite the numerous security provisions and anti-theft measures, it is still at times vulnerable to threats and attacks by cyber criminals and cheats. These cheats disrupt online transactions and can even steal your money during the process. Here are some of the methods through which they do it to help you be more careful:

Phishing

Phishing means impersonating banks, financial institutions, or other seemingly legitimate sources and asking users to fill in or update their personal information through a link, which leads to a fraudulent website. The secret information could contain bank account numbers, passwords, credit card numbers and expiry date, etc. At times, phishing emails come with attachments that download malware on the recipient's computer, recording private information like keystrokes, username and passwords, etc. The information is then sent back to the attacker.

Pharming

Pharming is a bit more complicated and a step ahead of phishing, where the victim is led to a fraudulent website through a virus, that possibly originated from a phishing email.

On the Internet, websites are identified by the means of IP address. Whenever you type in the URL of a website, a DNS server translates it into an IP. Now when a user visits a website for the first time, the DNS entry for that site is usually stored on the PC's local cache so that the system need not access the DNS server every time for the same website. In pharming, a virus attacks the DNS cache, modifies the entry so that the user is led to the fraudulent website without his or her knowledge. Pharming attacks can also attack the DNS servers, but this does not usually happen because these servers are protected against such attacks very well.

Skimming

Skimming devices are used to compromise credit or debit cards during a purchase. A skimming device is a pocket-size scanner that is usually attached over a card reader. The scanner stores the information of the card while it is being swiped and transmits it to the scammer or stores it on the device. The information can be used later to make purchases.
