Treatment of Periodontal Disease Should Include Omega 3 Supplementation

Periodontal disease is a gum disease that primarily affects older people. It starts as gingivitis and if left untreated can advance to full periodontitis. Treatment of periodontal disease is unpleasant, expensive and quite serious. But there is now growing evidence that taking daily Omega 3 essential fatty acid supplements can help in both the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease.

The implications of advanced gum disease are serious. They include, at worst, possible loss of a tooth or teeth, and potentially periodontal surgery. Older people are susceptible to gum disease, and it can be very difficult to cure gum disease in older people.

Periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums caused by pockets of bacteria which inflame the gums and cause dental plaque and tartar. It is commonly caused by a range of factors including poor oral hygiene and poor teeth cleaning. Age is a factor.

When you visit the general dentist he should always check your gums for signs of gum disease.

Of course prevention is always better than treatment for periodontal disease. Prevention includes better oral hygiene, attention to regular brushing of the teeth as well as flossing regularly.

More serious prevention often involves a visit to a dental hygienist. Scaling and root planing performed on the teeth and gums is one nonsurgical cleaning technique used to help treat gum disease.

But studies are now showing that increasing your intake of Omega 3 essential fatty acids can also have a beneficial effect on the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. A study in Japan found that those older people with lower levels of DHA were more susceptible to gum disease by a factor of 50%.

This makes sense as the essential fatty acids known as Omega 3 fatty acids have very effective anti-inflammatory properties, and gum disease is primarily an inflammatory condition.

There are many powerful health reasons for increasing your daily intake of DHA and EPA right from birth, given that almost all of us are deficient in these essential fatty acids primarily found in fish oil. Studies have shown many health benefits from daily Omega 3 supplementation. These benefits now include prevention of, or treatment of periodontal disease.

Other health benefits of Omega-3 supplementation include a reduction in the risk of death from heart disease.

Dental patients have a range of health reasons to seriously consider Omega 3 supplementation if they are not doing so already.
