How to Clean & Prep a Flower Bed
- 1). Lay a garden hose around the boundaries to map out where you would like to place your flower bed.
- 2). Purchase enough topsoil to fill the area you mapped out to a depth of approximately 8 inches. Use soil that contains organic material.
- 3). Mow or weed eat the area you have mapped out for your flower bed. You do not need to kill the grass or other vegetation, just trim it close to the soil.
- 4). Cover the entire area of your new flower bed with newspaper. Overlap the sheets, and layer them five to 10 sheets deep. The newspaper blocks light and water from reaching the grass and weeds below.
- 5). Add topsoil directly over the newspaper until the area is completely covered. Continue until you have added approximately 8 inches of soil.
- 6). Plant your flowers according to each plant's needs.
- 7). Cover the area between your plants with mulch.
