How to Install a Side Post Battery in a Ford
- 1). Open the Ford's hood and locate the battery. It is typically located in the driver's side of the engine compartment.
- 2). Loosen and remove the nuts holding the tie-down bar --- the metal bar spanning the width of the battery --- using a combination wrench. Pull the tie-down bar upward and off the battery.
- 3). Loosen and remove the negative battery cable (the black cable) using a combination wrench. Pull the negative cable away from the battery.
- 4). Loosen and remove the positive battery cable (the red cable) using a combination wrench. Pull the negative cable away from the battery.
- 5). Grab the battery and pull it out of the vehicle. You may need to lean the battery forward or backward if the battery tray --- the flat spot the battery sits on in the engine compartment --- has a lip to hold the battery.
- 6). Place the new battery on the battery tray.
- 7). Place the positive cable on the positive post, indicated by a plus sign, and tighten the terminal bolt with a combination wrench.
- 8). Place the negative cable on the negative post, indicated by a minus sign, and tighten the terminal bolt with a combination wrench.
- 9). Place the tie-down bar back over the battery and tighten the nuts using a combination wrench. Close the Ford's hood.
