    • 1). Do not go outside to play your sport during the hottest time of the day. Coaches and administrators should limit their teams to practicing just after sun up and just before sun set. These times of day are cooler than the afternoon hours. If you are not playing an organized school or community sport, try not to participate in the afternoon when the sun is at its highest because that is when you are at the greatest risk.

    • 2). Drink extra water on days when you will be playing outside. Overwhelming the body with water will allow your body to sweat in an effort to cool itself off. Drinking fluids before playing is vital as is taking water breaks during participation. Avoid drinking alcohol or anything with caffeine in it before participation in outdoor sports.

    • 3). Wear clothes that are loose fitting and clothes that breathe. Avoid materials such as vinyl and favor materials such as cotton or anything made of mesh. Clothes that are loose fitting will allow the body to remain cooler because it will not be suffocated by tight clothes. Clothes that breathe will allow air flow through them and will help the body to remain cool.
