His Most Famous Painting (Melencolia I) - Albrecht Durer

German Renaissance Master Albrecht Durer (May 1471 - April 1528) was a gifted artist.
He was a painter, printmaker, engraver, and a theorist.
In 1514, he created one of his most incredible copperplate engravings "Melencolia I (Melancholia).
" Measuring 31 cm × 26 cm (12" × 10"), "Melencolia I" is an enigmatic composition and is considered an all time masterpiece.
Albrecht Durer created the print in grey, which supports the serious mood of the engraving.
A brooding winged woman is seated at the centre of the image.
Her head rests on her left hand, while she clutches a divider in the other.
She bears a serious expression on her face and looks disillusioned, as if resigned in defeat.
She is surrounded by a disarray of geometric and architectural tools (such as a sphere, scale, nails, saw, hammer), which may be indicative of her being someone of intellect and involved in creative arts.
She is wearing a wreath of flowers on her head.
A set of keys and a purse are dangling in a jumble from her waistband.
A hound is sleeping on the ground next to her.
On the wall behind her, we can see a magic square, an hourglass, a weighing scale, and a bell.
The date 1514 can be found at the two bottom cells of the magic square.
There is a putto dozing off on a wheel, which rests on the adjoining wall.
A ladder and a huge stone of indefinable shape are also placed near it.
In the background, on the left, there is a comet shining bright just under a rainbow.
We can also see a chimera there carrying a flag with the title "Melencolia I" written on it.
It is impossible to find a definite co-relation amongst all the scattered items in the print, even though judging by some of them, it could be said the print may have been inspired by alchemy.
There is a slight controversy on the "I" in the title.
Some art masters believed the "I" stood for roman numeral one and that Durer intended to make a series of the four temperaments, Melancholic, Phlegmatic, Choleric, and Sanguine.
However the German humanist writer Cornelius Agrippa suggested that the "I" actually stood for imaginative (which means imagination).
"Melencolia I" is an allegorical representation of the melancholic state of mind.
Durer beautifully highlights the physical effects like the temporary inability to move and a lost expression, which often comes with a melancholic mood.
"Melencolia I" has numerous philosophical interpretations, but it is hard to find a definitive analysis of the engraving.
It may have been based on the popular renaissance belief that artists are melancholic.
Some art critics believed that "Melencolia I" was an extension of Durer himself.
It portrayed the artist's frustration on not being able to unlock the secrets of nature.
It is somewhat of a paradox that this image of a failed woman actually highlights Albrecht Durer's brilliance as a skillful artist.
Durer's innovative contributions to the art world inspire artists even today.
