How to Get a Remington 700 Action

104 11
    • 1). Determine the caliber for the rifle you want to build. Determine if your cartridge requires a long or short action.

    • 2). Create a list of special options for the action. For example, regular or jeweled bolt, trigger pull weight, blued or stainless steel finish.

    • 3). Order the action from a custom manufacturer or online distributor. Custom manufacturers such as Barnard Precision, Borden or Surgeon can provide you with an action made to your exact specifications. Factory-stock actions can be ordered from online gunsmithing distributors such as Brownells or MidwayUSA. Availability depends on Remington's production output, so actions may not always be available. Check often.

    • 4). Provide the salesperson with the name, address and FFL number of the FFL holder. The action is considered to be the "heart" of the firearm by the federal government, so it must be shipped to a valid FFL holder.

    • 5). Fill out the ATF form 4437 at the FFL holder's location when the action arrives. The FFL holder will call in the information to do your background check with the ATF. They cannot release the action to you unless you get approval from the ATF.
