What States Did the Native Americans of the West Settle?
- American Indians in the Mountain West region of the United States settled in the modern-day Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Utah. In Colorado, the primary tribes were the Arapaho, which occupied eastern Colorado, the Apache to the south and the Utes, which dominated western Colorado. The Utes also lived throughout eastern Utah. Other Utah tribes were the Shoshone and Paiute. The Cheyenne, Crow, Shoshone, Ute and Arapaho tribes controlled land in modern-day Wyoming. Most of Montana was occupied by the Crow Indians; other Montana tribes were the Blackfoot, Sioux and Shoshone.
- Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho constitute the U.S. Northwest region. The state with the largest number of federally recognized American Indian tribes is Alaska. As of June 2011, Alaska has 231 federally recognized tribes. The next largest number is in Washington, which has 29 federally recognized tribes. Before Europeans arrived, Oregon was home to tribes on its coast, including the Tillamook, Coquille and Coos. The state's high desert region included the Paiute and Shoshone. The Shoshone also dominated southern Idaho, while northern Idaho featured the Kootenai and Coeur d'Alene Indians.
- California makes up the majority of the nation's Pacific Coast region. As of 2011, the Golden State is home to 115 federally recognized American Indian tribes, the most of all the states in the continental United States. The largest California tribe in terms of population is the Yurok, which has about 5,000 members. This tribe lives in Northern California by the Klamath River. Other federally recognized tribes in California are the Pomo, Miwok, Chukchansi and Cahuilla.
- The Southwest region consists of Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Five tribes lived in Nevada -- the Northern Paiute, Washoe, Shoshone, Hualapai and Southern Paiute. The two tribes with the most land in modern-day Nevada were the Northern Paiute and Shoshone. New Mexico has 23 federally recognized tribes, making it the most of all the states in the U.S. Southwest. The majority of American Indians in New Mexico are descended from the Pueblo and Apache tribes. The Navajo Indians lived in northern New Mexico and Arizona. Arizona was also home to the Yuma, Hopi, Zuni and Mohave tribes.
