Homemade Natural Mosquito Repellent
The immediate reaction for most of you when worried from mosquito bites is go to the near drugstore and buy yourself one of the commercial mosquito repellants, either personal ones or aerial ones, which contain synthetic (i.e. DEET and Picaridine) or natural (i.e. Catnip and Lemon Eucalyptus) ingredients.
The other way that I shall reveal here is to make your own homemade natural mosquito repellent, without the need to deal with chemicals or problematic compounds. This areal repellant is based on essential oils and a simple burner - which will create a small mosquito-free space in a radius of 2-3 meters.
The 'natural' trend still has a lot of influence on us customers. For mosquito repellants the penetration was even faster due to the apparent health risks involved with synthetic repellents like DEET. Therefore, natural mosquito repellents become more and more popular - especially for infants.
One of the main reasons that DEET was the most widely used mosquito repellant until few years ago was its high effectiveness for a long period of time. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared that the DEET remains close to 100% effective for up to 8 hours.
The EPA also published a list of organic compounds they recognize as natural mosquito repellents. Altough none of them is effective for 8 hours like DEET, few are close to that - like Catnip & Lemon Eucalyptus oils.
The natural repellents were demonstrated to have different efficiency for different types of mosquitoes and different environmental conditions. Accordingly, the recommendation is to use repellants that contain a mixture of few ingredients to achieve optimal results.
So, if you are a real fan of DIY staff and also in favor of 'naturalism', I recommend you try making your homemade natural mosquito repellent by following this simple procedure:
1. First you have to add some water into the burner's cup
2. Add 4 drops of essential oil to the water - most effective oils are Catnip and Lemon Eucalyptus but Citronella and Geranium will do OK too.
3. Light the candle inside the burner - the heat of the candle will heat the water and the essential oil inside it.
4. Wait a few minutes for the essential oil to slowly evaporate into the air, creating the mosquito free zone around the burner
5. The effect of this homemade natural mosquito repellent should last at least 1Hr. If you feel the mosquitoes start to reappear, just add few more drops and you are safe again!
6. Remember - mixing few types of essential oils can get even better results.
